About miguel toran
journalist + photographer + cameraman = visual journalist
This simple equation defines what I do. I am a Beijing based visual journalist with more than five years of experience in Asia. After graduating in Journalism at the Ramon Llull University in Barcelona I moved to Hong Kong to join the Asia Bureau of the Spanish Public Television (TVE) as video journalist.
I worked in TVE more than five years, based in Hong Kong and Beijing covering a various range of subjects: natural disasters, revolutions, elections, terrorist attacks, 2008 Olympic Games, 2010 Shanghai Expo and many feature stories around Asia-Pacific, from Pakistan to Vanuatu.
I am currently based in Beijing freelancing as a photo and video journalist, trying to explain puzzling realities through visual projects. In an era of overexposure to audiovisual messages, which is the main ingredient to catch up the attention of an audience? Is it stunning HD video? Is it dramatically photoshopped images? Or cutting edge DSLR video mixed with the last music trends in a flash slideshow? From my point of view the aesthetics are important, but not as much as the storytelling. Explaining complex stories in a simple and clear format and with an interesting narrative is the key to engage the audience.
